Summer Begins with Country Fair Fun

The Annual Country Fair at Saint Herman’s Orthodox Church is quickly becoming one of the area’s

anticipated summer events. This is the Fair’s fifth year of offering a day full of great food, games,

shopping, and lots of family fun! The Fair will take place on May 30 from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Saint

Herman’s Antiochian Orthodox Church, 6988 N En Dove Road, Wasilla.

This event provides a great way for the kids to celebrate the beginning of summer vacation. The carnival

games, including the ever popular Chicken Fling, and bouncy house provide tons of fun. There are lots

of prizes to be won! Children will also enjoy meeting our farm animal friends in the Petting Zoo. Our

face painting booth has some of the best face painting you will see this summer. Participate in the pie

eating contest or buy a duct tape sword for a safe, mock battle! While the kids play, mom and dad can

check out the Trading Post for some great deals on locally handcrafted items. Then, the whole family

can try to win a delicious cake from North Star Bakery in the Ultimate Cake Walk.

Visit with neighbors and meet new friends over the fantastic food – gyros, pulled pork, locally made

sausage, hot dogs, slices of pie and more! Don’t miss Fizzywig’s sodas, the all-natural soda stand serving

sodas the old fashioned way, with your choice of cream, whipped cream, or ice cream. There will be lots

of tasty treats including old fashioned candy, snowballs, and fairy floss (a.k.a. cotton candy).

One of the highlights of the Annual Country Fair is always the Cupcake Contest. If you have ever wanted

to try your hand at a great baking competition, this is it! There are categories for both adults and

Watch for details on our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/SaintHermansAnnualCountryFair. Start your summer

with a beautiful, fun filled day for the entire family!

Visit by Pilgrims from St. Ignatius Church in Twin Falls, Idaho June 7, 2015
Visit from Fr. Andrew Damick and Subdn. Andrew Hall
August 2, 2015

On Sunday August 2, 2015, we were blessed to be joined by the Reverend Father Andrew Damick, the pastor of St.Paul Antiochian Church in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Father Andrew was in Alaska as a teacher at the annual Eagle River Institute, but came to St. Herman Church at the request of Fr. Matthew Howell, who was a weekend intern at St. Paul Church during his three years of seminary. Father Matthew was ordained a priest two years after graduating from seminary, so this was Fr. Andrew's first chance to see his former pupil serve the liturgy. Father Andrew preached a wonderful homily during the liturgy and then during coffee hour gave a one-hour teaching about the life of St. Raphael of Brooklyn. He told many stories about St. Raphael and told us how we have been affected by the saint's life even though he reposed 100 years ago.

Joining Fr. Andrew on his journey to Alaska was his good friend, Subdeacon Andrew Hall. Subdeacon Andrew is a reader at Sts. Peter and Paul Mission in Boone, North Carolina. He sang in our choir for Great Vespers on August 1, Orthros and Liturgy on August 2, and then returned again on August 5 to sing during the Vesperal Liturgy for the feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

On Wednesday August 5, Fr. Matthew took Fr. Andrew and Subdn. Andrew to Anchorage to visit Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. Father Andrew was classmates in seminary with Fr. Vasili Hillhouse, the pastor of Holy Transfiguration Church. On the way back to Eagle River they stopped at St. Innocent Cathedral (OCA), and capped off the afternoon with a hike to the St. Sergius Chapel at St. John Cathedral (Antiochian).

Father Andrew's teachings were edifying to the entire parish, and Subdeacon Andrew's experience and suggestions regarding music were quite helpful to the choir. We thank God for their visit and pray that He will grant them many years of fruitful labor in their respective parishes.

Youth Group Sorts 2500 Pounds of Food for the Food Pantry of Wasilla
September 1, 2015

On Tuesday September 1, 2015, Fr. Matthew Howell and Michele Kamilos took 10 teenagers to the Food Pantry of Wasilla for a "sorting party." In just over an hour they sorted 2500 pounds that had been collected at the Alaska State Fair, putting the food into crates with different labels such as "beans," "vegetables," "fruits," etc. A couple teenagers also restocked the shelves with food from the warehouse so that clients would find what they needed the next day. At the end of the evening, the volunteers were given a couple cartons of ice cream as a thank you for their service. We look forward to more service projects with the MatSu Food Pantry!

Pre-Teens Sort Food at Food Pantry of Wasilla

On Tuesday night September 15, the preteens (10-12 year olds) went with Andrea Dittbrender to the Food Pantry of Wasilla to sort food that was collected at the Alaska State Fair. They sorted about 1000 pounds of food in a little more than an hour into categories such as beans, vegetables, fruits, pasta, etc. We look forward to working more with the Food Pantry of Wasilla.
